Position or Title Environmental mediator/facilitator

Professional Biography Dr. Michelsen is a mediator/facilitator and environmental scientist with 20 years of experience working on complex public policy cases. She served in the State of Washington facilitation pool, and has worked as a facilitator on projects relating to habitat restoration and natural resources, ESA, NRDA, sediment cleanup, waterfront construction and redevelopment, land use, facility siting, allocation of liability, solid and hazardous waste issues, dredging, and regulatory streamlining. She has also served as a neutral expert on evaluation of insurance claims and liability relating to large cleanup sites.  As a former state regulator and natural resource trustee, Dr. Michelsen has been responsible for technical assistance and regulatory oversight of investigations and cleanups at more than 80 federal and state Superfund sites throughout the Pacific Northwest, more than half of which have had Native American involvement. As a result, she has substantial experience negotiating difficult issues regarding environmental studies and data interpretation, remedial technologies, costs, and legal and regulatory interpretations. Dr. Michelsen has degrees in chemistry, geology, and environmental science and engineering, and has a national reputation as an expert in the development of cleanup standards and programs for aquatic environments. In addition to facilitation and mediation in the public policy and environmental area, she does volunteer work in community and family mediation.
