Position or Title Principal

Professional Biography As co-founder of CONCUR and its theory of practice, my focus is on rigorous analysis; a strong baseline knowledge of environmental science, law, and planning; strong awareness of the policy context of disputes; and a commitment to a nonpartisan stance in our facilitation and mediation.  I specialize in designing and executing processes to resolve complex or science-intensive environmental disputes of all kinds.  Since 1987, CONCUR has provided services in neutral evaluation, stakeholder analysis, process design, joint fact-finding, and agreement-focused mediation. While our work is focused on the American West, we have worked in most regions of the US and in about 15 nations and we collaborate with colleagues nationally and internationally. We work across the full range of issues including water supply and quality, infrastructure, toxics remediation, species recovery, land use and urban design.   This work builds on my earlier career in coastal zone management, followed by rigorous training at the MIT-Harvard Public Disputes Program, where I worked with the leading theorists in the field to develop cases studies and simulations, and "build theory from practice". I have also taught courses at UC Berkeley and Vermont Law School and presented lectures at Stanford Law and Business School, UCB Haas School of Business, and UCB College of Environmental Design.
