Professional Biography Lawrence Susskind, Ph.D., is Ford Professor of Urban and Environmental Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Director of the MIT Science Impact Collaborative and Vice Chair of the Program in Negotiation at Harvard Law School. Professor Susskind’s research and teaching and practice focus on conflict management and the mediation of multi-party, multi-issue disputes. His book Breaking The Impasse: Consensual Approaches To Resolving Public Disputes (Basic Books, 1987) summarizes his experience as a mediator of complex facility siting and environmental disputes. He has also facilitated the resolution of numerous science-intensive policy disputes (such as those involving health and safety standards and the definition of acceptable levels of risk) as well as internal disputes within corporations and government agencies. His most recent books are Judicial Dispute Resolution, Entrepreneurial Negotiation, Environmental Diplomacy: Negotiating More Effective Global Agreements; ; Dealing With An Angry Public.
