Professional Biography I have been involved in the field of environmental conflict resolution (ECR) and collaborative resource management for over 20 years as a practitioner, trainer, researcher, and administrator. During that time, I have worked as a practitioner in several different contexts: multi-day public consensus building workshops with over 400 participants; multi-year working groups and advisory committees; multi-party negotiations over several months; and two hour two-party cases. I am familiar with federal laws and regulations, intergovernmental relations, and stakeholder engagement and public input processes, having served in local government, with state agencies, and at the federal level. In my ECR practice, I am committed to engaging all parties in thoughtful deliberation over tough issues. ECR is a useful tool when contentious issues or personalities make negotiations unproductive, or when the outcomes offered by other forums are uncertain or ineffective. These conflicts usually require political sensitivity and an appreciation for both the terms of confidentiality and the imperatives for public education and involvement. My style is eclectic and flexible. I help people in large part by knowing when to be more or less directive, when to push for closure or step back and encourage more dialogue. I believe that in the search for common ground, different perspectives and interests must be acknowledged and respected before trust and collaborative problem solving can begin.
